DIY Skinny Jeans

My husband just completed the finishing touches on our bedroom renovation. The last step was to rebuild the entire closet in our master bedroom. He made the space more usable and also added shelves, pot-lights and storage. I was soooo excited when I saw it all finished I could barely contain myself! He didn’t understand why I was so excited for a closet. I told him it’d be like me parking a ferrari in the driveway and telling him to go have fun. It doesn’t take much to get me excited!

So the organizing began. As I was moving all my clothes over from the spare room I did a little fall cleaning. I donated a bunch of stuff and as I went through my jeans I realized I only had one pair of skinny jeans. It’s impossible finding the perfect skinny jean. For some reason they don’t fit the same as regular jeans. I find they usually have a higher waist or the legs are too skinny to fit my leg in. (I never had a calf complex until skinny jeans came into fashion…haha)  So I got out my sewing machine and practised on a pair first. Success! So I altered two more pairs. Now I have the perfect collection of skinny jeans for the fall to wear with boots! Hope you like it.

Important Tip: Some tutorials insist you sew the inside leg seam (maybe to hide the alteration?!) But some jeans have a flat felled seam on the inside that I would rather not mess with. I sewed one pair on the inside seam and another pair on the outside seam to experiment and they both worked. Basically, you want to chose the seam that has the least amount of detail to alter.

You will need

  • jeans
  • pins
  • denim thread
  • sewing machine
  • scissors

Step 1 Put on your jeans inside out. Pin the jeans as loose or as tight to your leg as you like.

Step 2 Lay your jeans on a table or floor and make sure the lines are relatively straight and even on both legs.

Step 3 Draw a quick straight line along your pinned seam. Fabric pencils barely work and cost money so my grandma gave me the best tip! An old skinny bar of soap! Works awesome and washes out!

Step 4 Sew along the line (then zig-zag) and cut off the extra fabric. That’s it!

I wish I had invented blue jeans. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal and simplicity – all I hope for in my clothes – Yves Saint Laurent
